Chapter 17
Maisy
“Bees that have honey in their mouths still have stingers in their tails.”
~ Granny Turner
Barbara-Jean Nelson dipped the oversized ladle into the large punch bowl and poured her “Party Punch” into a plastic cup. She brought her concoction to every birthday party, dinner party, and town event—even church picnics. She’d never tell anyone what her secret ingredient was, but there was definitely alcohol involved. Having one too many cups was sort of a rite of passage in Wishing Well.
She was in her late eighties now, and she’d sworn that she’d share her recipe with someone under fifty so they could continue the tradition, but not until her nineteenth birthday.
“Now which one are you?” she asked, handing me a red Solo cup.
If I had a dime for every time I’d answered that question, I’d be a millionaire. “Maisy.”
“Oh, you’re the nurse?”
“No. That’s Melody.”
It didn’t bother me when people mistook me for my sisters.
Except for one time.
After Bentley kissed my brains out in the high school hallway. Then called me Madi.
My first reaction had been relief. I just plain couldn’t believe that I’d kissed Bentley Calhoun, and the mistaken identity seemed almost like a get out of jail free card.
But later that night, lying in bed, I’d cried about it. I told myself the tears were because I was mad at myself for kissing my sworn enemy. Deep down, though, I’d known I was fooling myself.
The next morning I’d gotten up an hour early cut my waist-length hair to my shoulders, then dyed it red. My reasoning, at the time, was that kissing Bentley had traumatized me and I never wanted mistaken identity to cause anything like that to happen again.
But after the night we’d shared locked in City Hall together, and maybe even before then, I was starting to think that my motivation had actually been hurt over the fact that Bentley hadn’t known I was the one he was kissing.
Could it be possible that I’d had feelings for Bentley all this time? His psychologist had said that what we’d been doing was foreplay. Could he be right?
It sounded crazy to me, but the night we’d shared had made me look at him in a different light. One that was far too bright for my liking. I would’ve much rather gone back to the time when I was in the dark about my real feelings for Bentley.
“Oh, right, then you’re the one that took Suzanne’s job,” Barbara-Jean commented.
I hadn’t taken anyone’s job. Suzanne had been having an illicit affair with the mayor and together the two of them had managed to embezzle over a freaking million dollars.
But, sure. I took her job.
“And you’re workin’ with Bentley?”
“I am.”
“That boy is a saint.”
To some, he was. To me, he’d always been a great big sinner. A flush rose on my cheeks as I remembered just how sinful he’d been when we were locked in together. I still wasn’t sure I’d fully processed what we’d done.
In the six days since our lockdown adventure, I’d been actively blocking any personal feelings, good or bad, from getting in the way of work.
